Today, we painted masks, imitating older masks that symbolize a deeper meaning, or something created from our own imagination. I chose to paint the Supreme God of Wealth, who although didn’t carry a deeper meaning, ruled over the other 5 Gods of wealth in Chinese Mythology. I tried to continue the pattern on the side to make it appear more continuous.

At the mask making center today, I chose to paint the mask of a famous Chinese folklore character, sun wu Kong (also know as monkey king). The colors on the mask represent courage, forwardness, and bravery, similar to the action reflected in the mask, the monkey king transforming into a disguise to save others.

My mask is meant to be a representation of my zodiac sign, pisces, which also being a fish represents prosperity in the New Year. The white paired with the red in the fish shoes there is good and evil in each being, and the asymmetrical design continues that theme.

This is my best depiction of Jing Ke who attempted to assassinate Qin Shi Huang but failed. The sharp eyebrows represent courage and determination and the knife on his forehead represent his past as an assassin. My face sculpture displays the elegance of the assassin Jing Ke while also emphasizing his strength and bravery.

The mask I chose was a warrior princess. I decided to color it myself not following the picture. I used gold to make parts pop out and to add detail of my own.

My example of craftsmanship is this painting of an old man, representing happiness, prosperity and longevity. My one handmade detail is the use of negative space to represent the tan skin of the man.

This is my Beijing Opera Mask. As you can see it contains a primary red coloring, signifying that the person is very noble or has power as well as being honest and fair. This mask also contains black, which commonly represents a lack of humor but a strong sense of patriotism for their country. There are hints of white around the eyes as well, and white is widely regarded to represent evil and devious personalities.
